At the recent Mission Consultation for the Porvoo churches, the Finnish delegation brought news of the Thomas Mass. "Planned by young city dwellers", the Thomas Mass is spreading across Scandinavia as "an expression of church for doubters and seekers" .
"In Helsinki, an independent community has emerged around the St Thomas Mass. It is an association of like-minded people operating within the Lutheran Church but crossing parochial boundaries. The St Thomas Mass Community which arranges the Mass has about 3,000 members and its own pastor.
Within the Lutheran Church of Finland the St Thomas Mass is a relatively new form of worship. It combines old traditions with newer elements of spiritual guidance to meet the needs of modern, urban people ecumenically and in a progressive mood."
